Why You Should Never Perform DIY Garage Door Installation

Article Image

If it wasn't obvious, DIY garage door installation is a bad idea. It's dangerous and can cost you a lot of money. This article explains just some of the many risks that DIY garage door installation poses. If you're considering installing your own garage door, reading this article is highly recommended. It could potentially save your life.

Injury

Without the proper skills, garage door installation can cause serious injuries. Not only could you injure yourself during the installation, but you could also injure others if the garage door malfunctions.

Firstly, garage doors are heavy. A garage door can weigh over 100 kg, depending on the size and material. That is more than enough to crush or even kill you if it falls on you. Even aluminium garage doors, which can be as light as 30kg, can do significant damage if you aren't careful.

If that alone isn't enough to dissuade you, you could also get electrocuted. Garage door openers need wiring installed. Working with electricity can be extremely dangerous without the proper training. Electrocution can be fatal, and even if it isn't, you can still sustain permanent injuries.

On top of these, there are several other injuries you could sustain while installing a garage door. These include cuts, back injuries, pinched fingers, and more. Though these are certainly less severe by comparison, they should not be taken lightly.

Moving Select;

Damage to property

DIY garage door installation can also do damage to property. As previously stated, garage doors are heavy. Much like with people, a falling garage door will damage anything else it falls on. This can be especially disastrous if it falls on your car after you've installed it. You also need to consider the potential damage to your home. Depending on the damage done, repairs can be quite costly. Lastly, in addition to all these costs, you'll almost certainly need to replace the garage door itself.

Building code compliance

One legal requirement for garage doors is that they meet the building code of the state or territory. For amateurs, this can be very difficult. Not only do you have to understand the building code, but you also need to follow it successfully when installing your garage door. Building guides are designed to keep people safe. On top of being illegal, failing to comply with the building code can pose a threat to your safety and the safety of others.

Voided warranties

For obvious reasons, DIY garage door installation will also void the warranties of most garage doors. This means that if you somehow manage to install it successfully, you still won't be protected by the warranty. If the garage door is damaged within the bounds of the warranty, this can be problematic. In such cases, you would need to pay for the repair yourself. You may even need to replace the garage door.

The cost of garage door installation

Ironically, trying to save money on garage door installation can end up costing you significantly more. What's more, you might still end up paying for garage door installation. In the end, unless you have experience and training, DIY garage door installation isn't saving money; it's simply gambling. And, just like gambling, it can bring serious harm to you and the people around you. There is no reasonable justification for taking such risks, especially if you live with others.
